It was well past midnight when they eventually chose to sit at a table, all the feelings, and hold a council of war as to who was the most prominent amongst them all.
Anger with a flushed face, stood up first.
"Undoubtedly, me. I protect him; I'm his defence mechanism, guiding him to create, uphold, and honour his boundaries. I push him to stand up for himself. I’m a burning fire within him; nobody can harm him in my presence!” he exclaimed.
"I control him; isn't that the greatest power one can have over his mind?" questioned Fear. “I have my young ones—Nervousness, Anxiety, Panic and Overwhelm to do my bidding and regulate his actions.”
"Fear, you make him dance to your tunes through negativity, but I control him by enticing him. I operate using the principles of positive reinforcement. He craves for me; like an addiction, he comes to me all by himself," smirked Obsession.
Jealousy, Greed’s cousin, was not to be left behind. With a haughty expression, her long black robes billowing after her, striding back and forth across the room, she declared, "I'm his motivation to do better in life; he aspires to be better than everyone else because of me. He’s the best at his profession because I didn’t let his peers get ahead of him. Responsible for his success, I believe I am the most powerful of us all.”
Happiness sighed, brushing a strand of hair out of her eyes as she spoke. "What's the point of living if he doesn't smile at all? That's what I bring to the table. Fear, you spoke of your children. Think of mine. Enthusiasm, Excitement, Gratitude, Optimism, Elation and so many others. He's able to love others and give so much to his relationships because of me. His positivity, zest for life, and compassion—that's all me. His family says he is the human form of sunshine—again, me. His well-being in every form, be it physical, mental, and emotional, is linked to me."
"I remind him of the memories of the past, days gone by. He cherishes them and never forgets anything. I am the reason why he is still attached to his roots, why he still keeps his favourite pictures from childhood in a corner of his room," remarked Nostalgia.
Sadness let out a peal of laughter, causing heads to turn. “Nostalgia, I remind him of far more significant events than a handful of memories. Had I been on his mind forever, he would have never forgotten his first love. Or the time when he lost his beloved pet. Don’t you all remember what a miserable, crying wreck he was after those heartbreaks?”
"He was born with me. I was the first feeling he felt, and he still talks of me fondly," blushed Innocence. “Like an intrinsic part of his being, I have always been there since he was an infant, deep within his heart, long before he even knew you all,” she scoffed.
Curiosity stood up next and smiled wryly at Jealousy.
"I am his ability to learn. You, Jealousy, are responsible for his thirst to achieve more. But I'm his passion, his never-ending need to learn more. I am his thirst for knowledge. As long as I'm around, he'll grow in every area of life."
“That’s a personal attack!” shrieked Jealousy.
“This is such a pointless conversation. Only positive feelings should be allowed to contest; anything negative cannot pass the litmus test,” stated Innocence.
“Who said power cannot be dark? How can you describe us as negative?” retorted Anger.
“You’re too aggressive, Anger.”
“I am not; look at Jealousy! Why am I always vilified?”
“Please calm down, everyone!”
On and on, the argument went on for hours, like a raging wildfire, a battle without a conclusion, until they all noticed that Indifference was unusually quiet. He hadn’t uttered a word.
"Aren't you going to say anything?" questioned Anger.
Indifference smiled.
"I don't want to. All I know is, the day I step in, he's going to feel each one of you —and it will no longer matter to him anymore."
